CHAPTER SIXTEEN

At Callan’s command, the gold around my hands yanks me upward. I have a choice between being dragged up the step and along the floor or accepting the situation and hurrying in the direction I’m being pulled. Toward Callan’s bedroom door, where he slaps his palm against the access panel.

He catches the loose end of the chain as it tugs me through the now-open door. I glare at him, but he doesn’t say a word. He pulls me toward his bed and wraps the end of the chain around the nearest post so that I’m tied to it again.

He pauses then, and the briefest shadow of regret passes across his face before he turns away. “Stay here.”

As if I have a choice.

He leaves the door open, and I guess it’s so that Zahra can verify that I’m still a captive. He didn’t chain my feet this time, but they’re not much use to me right now.

With a sigh, I sink to the edge of the bed where I lean against the post, trying to get comfortable. Closing my eyes, I expand my other senses, using my hearing to the fullest extent.

As it turns out, Zahra isn’t in the mood for a whispered conversation.

As soon as Callan opens the door, her voice cracks through the room, emphasizing the extent to which sound can echo within the empty space.

“What the fuck, Callan?” Her heels clack loudly on the marble floor, but she doesn’t walk far enough to be visible to me through the open door. “Of all the fucking stupid things you could do. You haven’t brought her before the Cohort, but you ask Sophia’s human friend to come and play dress up?”

“It wasn’t like that,” Callan replies, sounding far calmer than I was expecting.

“Not like that, huh?” She sounds like she wants to pummel him. “Let’s see… Dresses. Shoes. Jewelry. Ribbons for her fucking hair! What part am I getting wrong?”

Ribbons. There weren’t any ribbons.

“Are you done?” he asks, less patient.

“No!” she cries. “I’m not done. I’m scared, Callan. I’m fucking scared for my daughter right now. Your enemies will exploit any weakness. You know that!” Zahra barely pauses for breath. “Sophia told everyone that the angel survived your flames—”

“Lana,” he snaps. “The angel’s name is Lana.”

“Fuck, Callan, are you listening to me? Sophia’s telling everyone that you can’t kill the angel. And if you can’t kill the angel, then none of us can. She says that we’re vulnerable and that you’re the one bringing the danger to us.”

I sense him move. Imagine him shaking his head.

Sense Zahra reach out despite needing to keep her distance.

“You burned Sophia’s hair, Callan. She hasn’t bothered to cut it or fix it because it’s visual proof that you nearly killed her. She’s gaining traction and it’s not just the Cohort who are listening to her now; the entire clan is taking notice.”

Callan says something in reply, but I don’t hear it because a closer sound makes my eyes fly open. A small presence I’m shocked I didn’t detect until now.
